Google Now is great, but a big flaw is that the screen needs to be awake and unlocked for you to use it. Here is a trick on how to unlock your screen while keeping the phone in your pocket, then doing a long press on the earphone button and still use all the features of Google Now, such as "Note to self".
One great thing I love about "Note to self get a haircut" (say "note get a haircut" for short), is that it will send you a G-Mail with your note typed out. If you don't use G-Mail however, there still way to send notes to yourself, by doing a standard S Voice unlock. After you are in S Voice, you can simply say "note to self, buy eggs", you will have a new note in S Memo that simply says "buy eggs" with a time stamp.
