Galaxy Note 3 Tips & Tricks Episode 44: Remote Control Camera With Remote Viewfinder

Camera with Another Android </h3> In this video, we look at a very cool but a not well-known feature called Remote Viewfinder found inside the Galaxy Note 3 and S4's camera app.  This app will give another Android device the ability to remotely control the camera app on the Note 3.  What is interesting is that Apple just recently filed a patent for this feature although this feature has been on Galaxy devices for a year now since the S4.<br /> <br /> <h3> Requirements</h3> One requirement to using this feature obviously is that you need another Android device.  And reading the reviews for this app, it won't work on all android devices, and it probably works best with most Samsung devices.  The app is called Remote Viewfinder, and you will have to install it on the device doing the remote controlling, which will be the  note 2.<br /> <br /> There are many ways to activate this feature however, the easiest way in my opinion is first check to see if NFC is enabled on both devices.  Then start the camera app on the note 3, tap this arrow to expand, tap on the share icon, select remote viewfinder, and select Easily connect via NFC.  Touch the devices together and once you hear that sound, tap on the Note 3 to beam to the Note 3.  Then you will see that it establishes a wifi direct connection and the remote viewfinder app will launch automatically on the Note 2.<br /> <br /> <h3> Near Total Control of All Camera & Video Functions</h3> You will see that you have total control of the note 3's camera app, and there is almost no lag.  You can change any camera or video setting, tap to focus, and capture videos and images.  It's  as if you were touching the screen of the note 3 directly.  However, there are a few things you can't do.  You can't select the mode button to access any special features of the camera.  The picture in picture option is also grayed out.  And last, you can't preview pictures you've taken on the remote device.  On a side note, there is a feature called share shot that will automatically transfer all the pictures you've taken on your note 3 to the note 2 and other android devices, but you cannot use remote viewfinder and share shot at the same time.<br /> <br /> <h3> What can I use this feature for? </h3> Well, say that you wanted to remotely control the camera settings such as the exposure, flash, focus, image resolution, then fire off the shot or video, it would be perfect for that.<br /> <br /> Two good uses are, if you are not behind the camera or when you are in the shot, you can get a preview of the shot then take the picture.  Another good use may be for times when you are in a really cramped space and you want to push the phone as far against the wall as possible to get a wider shot, and still be able to have full access to the controls, this feature will definitely make that possible. <br /> <br /> <h3> Usage Tips</h3> A few things to point out.  The note 3's camera app will quit if there is no activity after a few minutes.  You can make it not fall asleep by giving it a quick touch every minute or two.  Another thing is when you've got the devices paired, the Note 3 is hosting a wifi connection, which will consume a lot of battery life when this feature is active.  And last, the Note 2 will be connecting to the Note 3 with the wifi antenna which means any internet you use will be through your cellular data connection until you end the wifi direct connection. <br /> <br /> A few more tips.  Because wifi direct is already established, and the remote viewfinder app  on the note 2 and is still running in the background, you will see that if I simply go to remote viewfinder, it will launch the app on the note 2 automatically.<br /> <br /> The communication range was surprisingly good for wifi communications between two portable devices, and in my testing it seemed to go through about half a dozen concrete walls when the devices were 50 feet away, but it soon lost the connection shortly after that.<br /> <br /> <h3> Apple Patent Filed & Rewarded</h3> As mentioned, Apple has recently filed a patent to do something very similar if not identical to what this feature does which has been available on the Galaxy Note 3 and even the one year old S4.  Let's hope someone researching this topic at the patent offices finds this feature before the patent is rewarded so Apple and Samsung can avoid any unnecessary disputes.  Update: Apple has been rewarded this patent.<br /> <br /> <h3> Conclusion</h3> It is probably not going to be a feature that you're going to be using all the time, but there may be a time when this feature might come in very handy.  Speaking from personal experience, trying to take a self portrait worthy of a passport photo is harder than it seems.  If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and a compatible Android that you can use to control your camera, you can take your selfies to a whole another level.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Tips & Tricks Episode 95: New S Note Update, Whats New?

<div id="tdncontent"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufhfFFEHBtc" target="_blank"><img onload="tdnembed()" onmouseout="tdnout(this)" onmouseover="tdnover(this)" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lagSD7e8WP4/UzBrPsz_cgI/AAAAAAAAAjc/mk6gNjfGd3A/s685/%255Bgalaxy+note+2%255D032103h38m30.jpg" style="width: 100%;" /><br /><br /> </a></div> <h3>New S Note is not a S Note Replacement for the Note 2 </h3> If you try to use this app, it will quickly reveal that this app works totally differently than the S Note that you're used to.  So in this video, I'll explain what this app is intended for, and why it is an addition to your Note 2, and not a replacement to S Note.<br /> <h3> What the New S Note Is and Isn't </h3> So the New S Note is almost an identical copy to what's present on the Note 3.  But to clearly understand how the new S Note is different, you have to look at how S Note evolved on the Note 3.  On the Note 3, the functions of S Note that existed on the Note 2 branched off into 2 separate applications.  Action Memo and S Note.  Action Memo is purely for note taking and doing something with information written on the note.  It is an upgrade to the popup note function, but it comes with it's own popup note reader and editor.  S Note just never comes into the equation.  And on the Note 3, S Note is purely for creating drawings or sketches with sophisticated tools.<br /> <br /> Looking back on the older S Note app, which will still be present and work the same after you install the New S Note, you will see that it was made to handle both the functions of creating drawings and sketches as well as being an editor and manager of your popup notes.  Since it seems less likely that Action Memo will arrive on the Note 2, this is how you should use both the older and newer S Note from now on.  For popup note editing and managing, you should still use the older S Note.  For creating sketches you should use the newer S Note.  Sure the newer S Note can be used with popup note, but that's not what the new S Note app was designed for, and it will only add unnecessary steps to your note management, and there will be some compromises to deal with as well.<br /> <h3> New S Note's New Features</h3> When you open it for the first time, you will get a nice video intro, and you choose the type of cover that you like, choose to import any S Note files from you older S Note.  A new feature that people may find to have a lot of value is the new eraser mode.  For example, when you have multiple overlapping lines, and just want to erase a single stroke, you can do that and it really is a wonderful feature. <br /> <br /> As for other features, there are some additional features to add YouTube videos and capture videos directly onto the S Note, which are cool but pretty minor.  If you're curious what's on the Galaxy Note 3's S Note that isn't on the Galaxy Note 2's S New Note, there are 3 things.  The graph and charting features, the isolated editing box, and the ability to to add items from scrapbook.<br /> <br /> <h3> How To Import PDF's with New S Note</h3> A common question that comes up a lot seems to be can you still import PDF's?  Yes.  You can do that by going to Recent notes, menu, my files, PDF file.  Another question is can I create an event in S Planner with an S Note?  And another question I've seen a few times is, can you access wolfram alpha through the new S Note.  And the answer for both questions are no. you will have to use the old S Note to do that.<br /> <br /> So that's the thorough rundown on what the new S Note brings to your Note 2.  It isn't an update by any means.  It's a new application that replaces some of the functionality of parts of the older S Note which some people may find more valuable than others.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Tips & Tricks Episode 43, Extend Battery Life with Snapdraon BatteryGuru

review a relatively new app called Snapdragon BatteryGuru.  It is an app that should extend the battery life on your Galaxy Note 3.  I've tried many battery saving apps in the past, and they have all been a let-down because of the ineffectiveness, or their intrusiveness on how we usually use our phones.  But the Snapdragon BatteryGuru seems to hit the sweet spot and in the end, it does actually extend the battery life of the phone.<br /> <br /> As the name suggests, it will only be installable on a phone with a Snapdragon processor which means it should work with most Galaxy Note 3's, and most Galaxy S4, but probably not with devices with Exynos processors like Galaxy Note II's.  If you own a Galaxy Note II, or a Galaxy Note 3 with a Exynos processor, there are many battery savers in the Google Play store I have yet to check out.  If you know of one that you swear by and have kept on your device for more than a few weeks, please share in the comments below.<br /> <br /> So Snapdragon BatteryGuru.  It is the first battery saving app that I tried that I've kept for over a week.  Even paid ones such as Juice Defender Ultimate, were uninstalled off my device after a few days.  I've actually been running BatteryGuru for about 3 weeks now and for at least how I like to use my device, it does extend the battery life on my phone.  But I must say that the battery savings are limited mostly for times when the phone is idle, especially while you're sleeping.<br /> <br /> <h3> The Learning Process</h3> So first when you install it, it will tell you that it wants to learn your usage habits for 2 days.  It's a little frustrating because we live in an instant gratification world today, but I kinda liked the anticipation.  What I believe it's doing is that it's learning your usage patterns, your sleeping habits, how often you use apps with push notification, and the refresh patterns of background push services.<br /> <br /> After 2 days of collecting that information, what it does is relatively simple.  It turns off your data and wifi while you're sleeping.  Most people aren't going to wake up in the middle of the night to read the emails that come in.  No need to have your Note 3 checking and listening for emails to come in at that time.   And some apps, because of the way they a lot of people like using that app, they are a little too active even though you yourself don't use that app that heavily.  So it regulates that based on your usage and refresh patterns of that app.  Now if you still need to be notified at any hour of the day because your job requires it, there are plenty of options in there to make sure you are still receiving the message notifications as soon as they come in at any time of the day. <br /> <br /> And unlike other battery saving apps that do relatively the same thing, BatteryGuru seems to have gotten it right.  I really don't notice any difference in getting my push notifications.  The apps that I expect to be notified of as soon as they come in still do that, while the services that I don't check regularly seem to come in just the same, maybe they come in a few minutes later, but again, only for the ones that I consider non-critical services.<br /> <br /> <h3> Low Power Mode & Interactivity Power Boost</h3> There are 2 extra features that are worth mentioning.  The low power mode.  Here is a list of all the things it does to save battery, and you can tell it to come on when it reaches below the level of the battery that you specify.  And another feature called inactivity power boost.  After a set amount of time, like 1 hour of your screen being off, it will shut down all wifi and data until you wake the phone up again.  These two features you can enable by widget.  Considering the data and wifi antennas are both very power hungry features to have enabled, this mode will definitely save you a lot of battery, but at the price of convenience of not getting any push notifications until you wake up the phone by pushing the home button.  I personally consider this feature to be too intrusive so I have it disabled.  You are essentially disabling push notifications after your device has been not used for a while.  But considering that this feature can extend the standby time of your device to even a few days, it is good to know that I have this feature to enable for specific days when this feature would be beneficial.<br /> <br /> <h3> BatteryGuru Tips</h3> One side effect to BatteryGuru regulating how often for example your email is checked.  Your email app might say syncing is disabled.  However, it is because BatteryGuru might just have it disabled at that moment to save battery.  Again, this doesn't seem to get in the way of me being notified in a timely manner when messages come in.  However, you can make changes to how this app behaves in BatteryGuru if you feel that your messages for this app needs to be received as soon as they come in.<br /> <br /> <h3> Conclusion</h3> If you are a light user of your device, you will see a good noticeable battery gain.  I personally see up to 8 hours of additional standby time on light usage days.  On heavy usage days where I burn through a fully charged battery in 12 hours, I don't see any battery life gain because I don't really give it a chance for it to do it's thing.  In the end, I don't notice any negatives but on some days I get a good amount of battery savings.

Galaxy Note 2 Tips & Tricks Episode 94: Optical Character Recognition (Business Utility App)

<div id="tdncontent"><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Os1EEKNDi4" target="_blank"><img onload="tdnembed()" onmouseout="tdnout(this)" onmouseover="tdnover(this)" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-d4aT1UibQdU/UzLniu2lDKI/AAAAAAAAAzQ/3rZfDw25URE/s685/294.jpg" style="width: 100%;" /><br /><br /> </a></div> <h3>Optical Character Recognition (OCR) For Samsung Galaxy Note II </h3> Today, let's explore the app called Photo Reader and what makes this app  so special.  This app extends the features of Samsung Keyboard and the Gallery app in a really interesting way.  It may also prove to be a crucial tool to have in your pocket when you're traveling to a foreign country.<br /> <br /> So here is the app called Photo Reader.  It's an app that will turn your text on paper into characters for input.  But that's not what makes this app special.  It's special in the way it expands the features of some of your Samsung apps on the Galaxy Note 2.  We were able to successfully install it on the Note 2, unfortunately at this time, it doesn't work on the Note 3, although there are signs that Samsung, the makers of this app, are still working it.  More on that in a little bit. <br /> <h3> Main Features: Document Translation</h3> When you take a picture of a document, or you have a screenshot of some text and hit menu, you will see a new option there called "Detect text".  Make sure you have the right language selected.  You can make edits as necessary.  You can even share it to Google translate and get a translation of that.<br /> <br /> Another thing this app does is it extends the functions of your Samsung keyboard.  Say you wanted to paste text of something you were looking at onto something like S Note.  You can do it by long-tappng on this button next to the space button.  And you will now see the camera with the T on there.  Select that it will activate the camera.  You can scan something with text, snap the image.  Hit the check button, and now it's on your S Note.<br /> <br /> <h3> Other Features</h3> A practical feature you might find useful is this Dictionary mode which offers a live foreign dictionary.  If you've ever tried filling out a form in a foreign country, this might be a lifesaver.  Or if you were looking at a restaurant menu.  You have to make sure you have downloaded the right dictionary for this to work though.<br /> <br /> In the mode called Direct link, it will recognize phone numbers, email addresses, and web addresses, to create links for you to make calls, send email, or check out that website.  I think this feature would be nice if it worked quicker and more reliably when, for example, grabbing a link from your computer monitor.  It seems to struggle with this especially because of how camera sensor bands subpixels together.  It certainly helps when you get a little further away.  Also, it seems to cut off the link when there is a question mark in the link which is unfortunate because most links today do contain question marks.<br /> <br /> <h3> Tips for OCR</h3> A couple of tips.  Since getting a clear image is key, you need to make sure of a things.  Make sure the picture you're taking is shot with good lighting, make sure it's in focus and the lens isn't smudged, and make sure the text is upright to the orientation of the app.<br /> <br /> As mentioned, it doesn't seem to work on the Note 3.  I side-loaded the latest version of the app because I couldn't install it through the Google Play store.  It used to crash but now says my device doesn't have free space, which is not true.  I can access it through the gallery app, but cannot access the other functions shown in this video. <br /> <br /> <h3> Conclusion</h3> Photo Reader is a powerful app that comes with unique ways to extend the functionality of your Samsung apps and then some.  There aren't many other apps that extend the functionality of Samsung apps in such clever ways but if you do find one or know of one, make sure you share that info in the comments below.  Also, we hope that Samsung updates this app to make it work with the Note 3 because it really is a great tool to have in your pocket for those who need it.
